IPL 2013: Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab - Preview

IPL 2013: Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab - PreviewMumbai: Buoyant after a morale-lifting win over hotshots Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians will start favourites against Kings XI Punjab in their Indian Premier League clash at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday.

Mumbai outclassed RCB by 58 runs last night to score their second straight win after two successive losses and got their campaign back on track ahead of their ninth game.

With 10 points in their kitty at the halfway stage, Mumbai are fourth following their third consecutive victory at home, which they have turned into an impregnable fortress.

They will remain in that position going into the contest against the struggling KXIP irrespective of Sunday’s two games elsewhere.

For the second straight game on Saturday, captain Ricky Ponting dropped himself from the playing XI of Mumbai and stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma led his team to a second win.

Sharma had guided it past defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the previous away game.

Things seem to be falling into place for MI once the out-of-form Ponting has taken the decision to sit out and allowed talented West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Smith to take his place in the team as well as at the top of the batting order.

Smith has scored two fifties in the four games he has played so far and also delivered with the ball by taking two wickets in Saturday`s comprehensive win over RCB that avenged their first-leg defeat in Bangalore in style.

The batting has a settled look now and delivered big time in the three home games by rattling up huge scores of 209 for 5 against the Delhi Daredevils, 194 for 7 on Saturday and 183 for 3 against Pune Warriors.

After surprisingly not giving a game to Dhawal Kulkarni, their home product who had a very good season during Mumbai`s 40th title triumph in the Ranji Trophy, MI included him in the eleven yesterday and he contributed with a three-wicket burst.

With Smith and Harbhajan Singh, who delivered the knockout blow by sending back danger man Chris Gayle, also coming to the party, MI did not even need to use the left-arm slow skills of Pragyan Ojha on Saturday.

The bowling attack, in which Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson also pose a danger to the opposition, appears well-rounded and would present a big challenge to Punjab on the bouncy track that is the hallmark of this venue.

On the other hand, Kings XI are coming into the game after being outsmarted by holders KKR at the Eden Gardens. A victory over MI, unlikely though it seems, would increase their points tally to 10.

The visitors have an under-performing retired Australian great at the helm like MI, but unlike Ponting have not yet taken the big decision to leave out Adam Gilchrist.

The wicket-keeper batsman is yet to provide the flying start which he was known for in his heydays and a tally of 94 runs in eight games has hurt his side`s chances.

The inclusion of Mandeep Singh, who has the ability to clear the ropes with nonchalance and has scored 219 runs in eight matches, as Gilchrist`s partner has certainly given a better look to the batting.

With another experienced Aussie campaigner, David Hussey (165 runs in 8 matches), too not among the runs, the batting has struggled.

They have struggled in five games outside their home venue of Mohali in putting up scores over 150 and even at home, they have been shot out for 138 by Chennai Super Kings.

The batting line-up needs to put up a far better display against the likes of Malinga, Johnson and Harbhajan to match MI`s batting might.

The visitors bowling attack too looks a bit weak, especially in the spin department, barring the experienced Piyush Chawla who has taken only three wickets after figuring in eight games.

Praveen Kumar (nine wickets) and Azhar Mahmood (11 wickets from 7) have been the main wicket-takers with their ability to move the ball in the air, and they would relish bowling in seaming conditions at the Wankhede.

Nadal marches into Barcelona Open final

Rafael Nadal is still to miss out on a final in 2013 after he continued his long winning run at the Barcelona Open.
Rafael Nadal
The 11-time major winner cast aside fifth seed Milos Raonic 6-4 6-0 to ensure he has now reached the final in all the tournaments he has played in this year.
That run has come despite a knee injury that ruled him out of the second half of last season, as well as this year's Grand Slam-opener in Australia.
The 26-year-old appears fit and ready to defend his crown at Roland Garros next month, however, as he notched up a 38th consecutive win on the clay in the Catalan capital.
Nadal was beaten by Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo last week, to end his long winning run on the Cote d'Azur, but will be expected to triumph on Sunday when he meets compatriot Nicolas Almagro.
After rain again delayed the start of play, this time by four hours, Almagro cruised past Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2 6-1 in just 51 minutes.
Like Nadal, the fourth seed has not lost a set this week as he prepares to play in his 20th ATP Tour final - all of which have come on clay.
Nadal took a little longer to see off Raonic, but after a tight opening set the seven-time champion broke the Canadian three times to 'bagel' the young pretender.

In this video Sinjin shares important tips for having success in beach volleyball verses indoor volleyball.

Pass the ball in front of you in beach volleyball

Perhaps the most important difference in beach volleyball verses indoor volleyball is the location of the pass. In indoor volleyball you want to always pass to a specific area on the court, known indoor as area 2 / 3. The zone between area two and area three. Beach is different in that you want to pass the ball in front of you close to the net! Why?
  • It is easier to approach a ball when the pass is in front of you.
  • It is easier for the setter to set an ideal set when you lead them and pass the ball in front of you.
  • In beach volleyball the best set to hit is an up and down set and when you pass the ball in front of you it is easiest to do this.
  • Approaching on a ball that is in front of you and set up and down gives you the most choices of shots.
  • Approaching on a ball that is in front of you and set up and down gives you the best and longest look at how the defense is set up.
InPhil Dalhausser - Honu Sandal Fan concluding, always try and pass the ball forward and in front of your hitting approach. SARAH STEVENSON today announced her retirement from taekwondo.

The Champions League holders go into the first leg of their Europa League semi-final with Basel on Thursday night knowing the much-maligned competition represents a last chance of silverware.
Having failed to progress from the group stage in defence of European football’s biggest prize, Rafa Benitez’s inconsistent side tumbled out of both the Capital One Cup and FA Cup after reaching the last four.
But Cech is confident the Londoners will not be singing the Blues come the end of what has proved to be a turbulent campaign.
The keeper said: “It’s a semi-final of the Europa League, we would like to win it.
“We could be the first team in history to have won the Champions League and the Europa League back-to-back, so that would be a great achievement.
“It would be another European trophy to put in the trophy room at Stamford Bridge and I think it would be something we would be proud of.
“It would make the season successful and would make the fans happy, so we treat it with respect.
“We’ve come far and we would like to go all the way.”

Jalena Jankovic vs Samantha Stosur: Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Match Preview

Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur is all set to battle former World No.1 Jalena Jankovic, in what promises to be an intriguing contest between the two accomplished players.
Australian Samantha Stosur will be in action today as she battles former World No.1 Jalena Jankovic from Serbia in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix being played here in Stuttgart.
The Australian - Samantha Stosur has struggled all year long. Her performance at the Australian Open was rather disappointing and even in the tournaments preceding the Slam she struggled to put in any form of consistent performances.
But something that might just work in the favour of the former US Open Champion is the fact that the courts here in Stuttgart are slower and her kick serve could really hurt the Serbian, who isn’t the best mover on the court.
Having failed to win a title in the WTA circuit for over two years, the Jalena Jankovic has seen her ranking plummet to the mid-twenties. Also, considering her age that is rapidly achieving that 30 mark, one cannot see Jankovic reaching the anywhere close to the top of the ATP mountain now.
Jankovic did however win a title recently winning the Copa Colsanitas in February and played a highly impressive US hard court season where she reached the semis in Miami and then also did well in the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.
Head to Head: The Serb has a 5-2 lead over the Australian in their head to head series, but their only match on the red dirt resulted in a lopsided win for Stosur

Last 10 winners of the Miami Masters (Sony Open)

Of the nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, the Miami Masters or the Sony Open as it is officially called, happens to be one of the most prestigious tournaments. The event provides a good opportunity to all players to earn more world ranking points, and prepare them for the grandeur battles that unfold during the course of 14 days.
An annual-event held in March each year in Miami, the tournament was first organized in 1985 and was initially referred to as Lipton International Players Championship. However, the event came to be known by different names as the sponsor of the event changed at regular intervals. In 2002, it came to be known as the NASDAQ-100 Open and remained so for four more years. The tournament was then again changed to Sony Ericsson Open after the corporate giant agreed to a deal that was worth $20 million. The latest edition of the event has also been renamed as the Sony Open Tennis, and is expected to feature 18 of the top-20 male players in the world, though Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have opted out for different reasons.
Here we take a look into the last ten champions of the Masters title and the final matches they played

Champions League glory is Dortmund's dream, says Santana

in their power to make their desires a reality

Felipe Santana admits Borussia Dortmund are dreaming of Champions League glory as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the first-leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.BVB saw off Malaga in their quarter-final with a stunning late show in the second leg, while los Blancos comfortably beat Galatasaray - leaving both clubs just two games from the final at Wembley. And the Brazilian admits reaching the showpiece would be the realisation of a childhood dream, while speaking of the mutual respect between the two sides."If you're talking about the Champions League, of course it's our dream," the 27-year-old told Uefa.com."To play in the Champions League and to reach the final is the dream of not just me but that of all children born with the desire to play football."We are facing Real Madrid and we already know each other. There is mutual respect and we know about the difficulties. So we will put into practice everything we have shown so far in the Champions League, so we can leave [the second leg] with a victory and continue our dream."Santana has done battle with both Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic for a centre-back slot this season and he believes the competition for places will prove to be a good thing in their quest for European success."Personally speaking, I think that in terms of how I feel as a player, I'm at 100% which is good for Borussia Dortmund," he added."Borussia Dortmund benefit because they have three [centre-halves] at the same level. And at any moment any of us can play and play well."

Velez midfielder Bella 'itching' to return

The 23-year-old confirmed he suffered a seizure in Friday's defeat to Newell's Old Boys, but has revealed the incident came as a result of "strong head trauma" not epilepsy

Velez Sarsfield midfielder Ivan Bella has revealed he is desperate to return to action after collapsing at the end of his side's clash with Newell's Old Boys at the end of last week. The 23-year-old fell to the ground moments after the final whistle in the 3-1 defeat, and appeared to suffer convulsions before being rushed to hospital following medical treatment at the scene.Despite the ordeal, Bella revealed he is itching to return to action as soon as he is cleared by medical professionals."I want to get back but I have to wait around ten days," he said on TV programme Estudio Futbol. "I want to be with my team-mates as soon as possible. I would put my boots on now to play if I could but the doctors will not allow it."I hope to be back for the re-match against Newell's in the Copa Libertadores."Velez's club doctor, Ricardo Coppolecchia, confirmed the player had suffered a seizure but Bella has since denied that the incident was linked to epilepsy."It was a seizure. I had not been taking any medication because it had never happened to be before or anybody in my family," he explained."They talked about sudden death and heart failure but we learned the truth when we spoke to the doctors. It was a strong head trauma that I was not aware of."Some members of Bella's family were in attendance for the match and the player admitted his loved-ones feared the worst at the time of his collapse."I saw the footage of what happened only on Saturday and I understood the scare my family were given," Bella added. "I could not believe what had happened. I was foaming at the mouth like a dog."I don't think my father wanted to see the footage. My brother has a torn ligament because he leapt from the crowd onto the field, just like my sister did.

Champions League: Spain and Germany go head-to-head

Borussia Dortmund players

After the Champions League semi-final draw, even the most ardent Premier League fan would be hard-pressed to complain.
Few would argue that this year's last four - Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid - are not the continent's finest at the moment.
The Champions League draw means there could be an all-German or all-Spanish final
The Bundesliga has become more and more globally popular in recent years, but this is the first time that its elite are coming head-to-head with the two teams generally assumed to be the best in world club football.
Spain and Germany's domestic competitions have long been assumed to be polar opposites. Spain's big two are untouchable, with almost all of the rest of the top flight in financial crisis.
Germany, on the other hand, is seen as a model of sensible financial management - even if this does overlook recent problems at Schalke, for example. Dortmund have been a flagship, winning successive Bundesliga titles with a vibrant team composed mainly of young German players.
This season, La Liga and the Bundesliga have had a little more in common. While Barcelona have streaked clear at the top in Spain, Bayern Munich have even more ruthlessly left the competition behind. Jupp Heynckes' team sealed the title on the first weekend of April, 20 points ahead of champions Dortmund.
Nobody is saying just yet that the Bundesliga has become uncompetitive - one cannot judge trends from only one season's evidence. Yet it seems as if a duopoly is developing in Germany to mirror the Spanish one.
Even if Bayern have reclaimed the German title from Dortmund by a comfortable margin this season, the Munich side have been driven to distraction by the Westfalen side's quality in recent seasons. There is a feeling on both sides that this will be an enduring rivalry.
So we may well be looking at two different models of operation - Barcelona and Real Madrid retain the cream of the world's superstars and run up big debts, while Bayern and Dortmund go for more prudent housekeeping.Yet we are also seeing European club football's two major sparring partners in action, with the possibility of a reprise of their domestic face-offs at Wembley on 25 May.

IPL 2013: Chris Gayle's 175* and 2 wickets highlight Bangalore's commanding win against Pune

Royal Challengers Bangalore scored the highest T20 score ever as Chris Gayle slammed a record 30-ball century at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday evening. The team eventually defeated Pune Warriors by 130 runs. The win is Bangalore's sixth in eight matches and puts them on top of the points table. (Scorecard)Bangalore scored a mammoth 263 for five wickets in their 20 overs against Pune who lost wickets at regular intervals during their reply. No batsman however could even remotely replicate the stunning display of power hitting from Gayle who had scored an unbeaten 175 off 66 ball, an innings studded with a record 17 sixes and 13 fours."It was one of those days. It was a good wicket and we needed a good total," Gayle said after his brutal innings. (Stats)Gayle was in super touch, middling the ball from the very start after the match was interrupted briefly by a sharp shower. His century came off just 30 balls and contained 11 sixes and 8 fours. The Jamaican erased the record of Australian Andrew Symonds, who had cracked a 34-ball T20 century for Kent. (Watch analysis)After Pune skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bowl first, Bhuvneshwar Kumar - eight runs in three overs -- was the only one to survive the Gayle onslaught. All the Pune bowlers went for runs as not on Gayle, Dilshan (33 off 36 balls) and AB De Villiers (31 off 8 balls) came to the party as well. Kohli was run out for 11 off 9 balls.

Sachin Tendulkar to bat on at 40

NEW DELHI: Record-breaking batsman Sachin Tendulkar turns 40 on Wednesday with no plans to retire despite media speculation and recent form suggesting that age is finally catching up with the "Little Master".
Test and one-day cricket's greatest run-scorer approaches the game with undiminished enthusiasm and insists he has much to offer despite slipping from the dizzying heights he reached earlier in his 24-year career.
"People have been talking about my retirement since 2005, but that does not worry me at all," Tendulkar chided reporters at a promotional event in New Delhi last week.
"Your job is to write, my job is to play. I will stick to my job and you stick to yours."
Tendulkar, afforded almost religious status in India, burst onto the world cricket scene as a 16-year-old in 1989 and has played a record 198 Tests and 463 one-dayers, scoring an unprecedented 100 international hundreds. He was singled out by Don Bradman but the Australian legend's Test average is one of the few marks that Tendulkar has not been able to threaten, with his 15,837 runs coming at 53.86. Bradman averaged 99.94.However, questions over his future mounted when he struggled for a year to score the ton he needed to take him to 100 centuries. He finally achieved the landmark against Bangladesh in Dhaka in March 2012.
Tendulkar, who decided not to play Twenty20 internationals after just one match in 2006, announced his retirement from one-day cricket last December in a bid to prolong his glittering Test career.
But his form in the five-day format has also dipped by his own stellar standards. He has scored just 1,145 runs in 21 Tests at an average of 31.80 since being part of India's World Cup-winning team two years ago.
And Tendulkar has not added to his tally of 51 Test centuries since making 146 against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2011.But despite his struggles with the bat, the veteran is refusing to follow fellow modern greats such as compatriot Rahul Dravid and Australia's Ricky Ponting into retirement.
Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to reach the 10,000-run milestone in Tests, suggested last year that Tendulkar's reflexes were on the slide. Former Australian captain Steve Waugh also feels he is past his best.
"He is not playing up to his standards," Waugh said last week. "But he himself has to decide (on retirement)."
When India succumbed to a Test series defeat against England at home in December, former skipper Sourav Ganguly backed calls for Tendulkar to quit.
He is getting a long rope because of what he has achieved," Ganguly was quoted as saying by London's Daily Telegraph newspaper. "As somebody watching it from outside, Tendulkar is not performing.
"And I think if I were Tendulkar, I would go (retire)."
But Kapil Dev, another ex-India skipper, says Tendulkar is fit and hungry for success even after so many years of gruelling cricket. "Sachin passes on both counts. He could go on for years if he wanted to," he said.
Six months ago, Tendulkar admitted in a television interview that retirement had crossed his mind, but said he would take it series by series before making a final call.
"I am 39-plus and it is not abnormal for me to think of retirement," he said. "I will go by what my heart says. At this moment, my heart says I am OK."
There has been speculation in the media over whether Tendulkar will play in India's next Test outing -- a three-match away series against world number one side South Africa starting late in the year.
There is even talk of organising two home Tests against an unknown opponent before the tour of South Africa to enable Tendulkar to bow out with 200 appearances in a farewell series.
But few would be surprised if the player, described by former India coach Gary Kirsten as cricket's "greatest role model", bats on at the top level.
As many as 102 cricketers have played Test matches after hitting 40, the oldest being Englishman Wilfred Rhodes, who was 52 when he took on the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1930.
Tendulkar, who last year accepted a government offer to take up a nominated seat in India's upper house of parliament, the Rajya Sabha, has never revealed what he wants to post-retirement.
"It is going to be hard because I have not experienced anything close to what I might go through when I retire," Tendulkar said in a recent television interview.I cannot relate this moment with any other moment in my life."

VVinay Kumar, Chris Gayle take Bangalore to an easy win over Rajasthan

gayle_tiwary_rr.jpg Brilliant bowling spells by RP Singh and Vinay Kumar gave Royal Challengers Bangalore a comfortable 7-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in the 27th match of the Indian Premier League 2013, being played in Bengaluru.

RCB did have a few hiccups losing Tillakratne Dilshan, Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers in quick succession as Shane Watson struck twice and James Faulkner once to give Rajasthan some hope. Saurabh Tiwary and Chris Gayle though gave the home side a comfortable win scoring 25 and 49 respectively. (BCCI Image)

IPL 6: Can Virender Sehwag and Viv Richards change Delhi's fortunes?

New Delhi: Six consecutive defeats into their IPL 6 campaign, the Delhi Daredevils franchise announced that they had signed on legendary West Indies batsman Sir Vivian Richards in the capacity of team ambassador. As per the official terminology, Richards would have an "advisory role" with Delhi. The news did not make many sit up considering Delhi's downward spiral had left them needing to win almost all their remaining matches to stay in the hunt for the IPL play-offs.
But lo and behold, in his first match as part of the Delhi set-up, Richards looked on from the sidelines as the team from the capitol hammered Mumbai Indians by nine wickets at home at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday evening. Chasing 162, Delhi won by nine wickets with three overs left thanks to a record 151-run opening stand between Virender Sehwag (95*) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (59). It capped a stunning upswing in fortunes, considering that in six previous matches Delhi had put up totals of 128, 160 for 6, 165 for 9, 152 for 5 and 83 - their lowest in the tournament.
Coincidence? Luck? It's difficult to say just yet, but fans of Delhi will seriously hope that Richards' arrival has sparked the much-needed drive needed to keep the team alive in IPL 6. Sehwag, who roared back to form after scores of 12, 25 and 17, credited the victory to Richards. He admitted after collecting the Man-of-the-Match award for his 57-ball innings that a few words of advice from the former West Indies captain had come in handy.
Can Viru and Viv change Delhi Daredevils\' fortunes? The signing of Viv Richards as Delhi\'s ambassador has coincided with Sehwag\'s return to form and the team\'s first win after six losses; it could prove a crucial alliance.
"I bluffed and thought that I have been in-form. Viv Richards spoke about bluffing, he said even if a batsman feels scared inside, he should show that he is confident, he has the self-belief. That has helped," was how Sehwag put it.
What else Richards told the team is not ascertained. But something has clicked. Sehwag had looked uneasy during his prior innings but on Sunday, on a good batting deck at the Kotla, he was sublime. In fact, he looked a batsman transformed. His driving, cutting and pulling were excellent and he clattered 13 fours and two sixes. It was the best Sehwag has looked for a long time, even considering that he was fed some very ordinary bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Munaf Patel at the start of Delhi's tricky chase towards 162.
Visibly, Sehwag looked in control of his machination and was relaxed. So relaxed, in fact, that during a strategic timeout he was seen laughing while putting an arm around David Warner's shoulder. It was as if he was telling the Australian: "Chill, brother, I've got this one." There were smiles shared all around between the batsmen and coach and others during that brief break in play, which was in stark contrast to the looks worn by Jayawardene and his team-mates after six losses in a row.
Sehwag is no stranger to bouncing back from adversity, and the Twenty20 format allows him the liberty of going hammer and tongs from the start. In Richards, he has a legend who can guide and offer advice any time. On the field, it on the shoulders of Sehwag that Delhi's fortunes rest for the remainder of IPL 6. Off it, any gleanings from Richards must be valued immensely. In many ways Sehwag and Richards are alike: cavaliers, swashbucklers, laidback at the crease, and uncluttered in the mind.
It will be fascinating to watch their alliance as well as how Delhi do from here, now that they have a huge win under the belt. Interestingly, it was at the Kotla where Richards scored his first Test hundred. Maybe it will be here that he helps kick-start a season-turning run for Delhi Daredevils.

Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Stuart Binny today said his team is not the underdogs ahead of Saturday's match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
"We are a very relaxed team. We don't have big names in our side, we don't have guys who can demolish teams in T20 cricket, but we are a unit that is very balanced.
"We've got a good set of bowlers and a lot of experience in our team so I wouldn't say we're underdogs at the moment," he said.
"We would have been, probably, at the start if the tournament but the way we've played, we're pretty happy so it's important to continue with this momentum," he told reporters.

Rahul Dravid wants to improve away-game record

Rahul Dravid wants to improve away-game recordBangalore: Worried about his team`s away record after losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid said the side hasn`t played its best cricket yet but oozed confidence of getting there with a balanced side at his disposal.

"In terms of winning away games I think it is going to be important as the tournament goes on. We have played very well at home by winning all three games. We have won a game away but lost two," Dravid told reporters in the post-match press conference here.

"We have to improve our record there. It is a long tournament. We still haven`t played our best cricket and hopefully we can do that."
"One of the good things about our team which I like is that we got the balance which allows us to play better away from home and that is the reason why I am a little more confident," he added.Talking about the loss against Bangalore, Dravid said the team lost its way once his partnership with Stuart Binny was broken."We thought of getting 50 runs in the last five overs and post a total of 160 on the board to defend. Bangalore has been a 150-160 wicket and we knew that. Unfortunately we never really got that extra 30 runs which we probably needed in the game," he said.Dravid said the team needed only one batsman to play a big innings but failed."We were disappointed after putting up a really good batting performance against Mumbai a few days ago...How we bounce back is going to be important for us," he said. However, Dravid said he was impressed with his bowlers for taking wickets at various stages of the match even though a total of 117 was not quite defendable.
Obviously going ahead, it is important for our top four or five batsmen to score runs for us as we have a long tail. We have been doing it so far in this tournament but we failed here," he said.Replying to a query, the former Indian captain said West Indian all-rounder Kevin Cooper was left out of the side and Shaun Tait and James Faulkner were picked in order to remove Chris Gayle early on.
They (Bangalore) have a top-heavy batting lineup. We tried to pick the team we thought we have the best chance to get Chris out and Tait and Jimmy have got him in the past," he said. With such a low score to defend, Gayle was able to play a very different game and without any pressure, the Rajasthan skipper said.Replying to a query, Dravid said Sreesanth missed out on getting more than an over as he planned to attack the Bangalore batsmen by rotating the bowlers."Sree just started and then as the game panned out we wanted to get wickets. Therefore I rotated my bowlers all the time. It is bit tough to give everyone a bowl and Sree missed out," he said.Replying to a query, Dravid said the team is expecting a lot from Australia`s Shane Watson.
He seems to be in a really good space. He is going to build up his workload," he said. PTI

Kings XI managed to get 13 runs off the over. With 16 required off the last over, Miller hit two huge sixes off Wright to hand the hosts their third win from six matches.Pune rode on skipper Aaron Finch`s strokeful half-century and significant contributions from Yuvraj Singh and Luke Wright to post an imposing 185 for four.Finch scored an attractive 42-ball 65 with the help of eight fours and two sixes while Yuvraj hit an impressive 24-ball 34, laced with two fours and three sixes. Wright helped the visitors finish with flourish, courtesy his breezy 34 off 10, during which he found the fence six times. In fact, 17th over from Azhar Mahmood yielded 17 runs as Wright hit him for four consecutive boundaries.Opener Robin Uthappa also scored a useful 37 off 33 deliveries with the help of four fours and added 83 runs for the opening wicket stand with Finch.Chasing the target, Kings XI got off to a disastrous start as they were two down with just five runs on board. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Gilchrist in the first over, Ajantha Mendis struck in the second over to send back Azhar Mahmood putting Punjab on back foot.Gilchrist scored just a boundary before getting caught behind by Robin Uthappa. Mahmood failed to get off the mark and was trapped leg before.
Mandeep and Manan Vohra then joined hands in the middle and started the repair job in pursuit of a challenging target. Both scored at brisk rate as they took Punjab past 50 in the sixth over. However, Yuvraj struck in the seventh over to end the 53-run stand for the third wicket between the two. Vohra was castled by Yuvraj while going for the sweep for 22 to put Punjab in more trouble.Miller walked out in the middle and destroyed the confidence of the Pune bowlers with a flurry of fours and sixes to put his side back in contention.Miller launched a sensational counter-attack in the company of Mandeep and cut, drove and pulled to keep the mounting run-rate under check. He first smacked Yuvraj for beyond the long on boundary and then came down hard on Sri Lanka's mystery opener Ajantha Mendis, hitting him for one four and a six.In the process, Mandeep reached his half-century with a four off Rahul Sharma in the 14th over to bring about the first 50-plus score for a Kings XI Punjab player in this edition of the IPL.Soon after, Miller also reached his double-digit figure after hitting Wright for a huge six over deep extra cover. This was Miller's first-ever 50 in the IPL which came off just 29 deliveries. Both added an unconquered 128 runs in just 79 deliveries for the fourth wicket partnership to script an impressive victory for the Punjab team.Earlier, Finch led from the front after being dropped by Gilchrist off Mahmood in the second over of the innings. Both Finch and Uthappa gave the visitors a flying start as they took the side to 77 in first ten overs. The hosts' bowlers appeared clueless as the duo helped Pune cross 50-mark in just six overs.Parvinder Awana gave Punjab their first breakthrough by dismissing Uthappa, who was caught by Gilchrist behind the wickets in the 11th over.Next man-in, Yuvraj made his intentions clear from the outset as he smashed leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for a six and a four in the 14th over.Finch raced away to his 50 in just 33 deliveries and was looking good for a big total just when pacer Manpreet Gony got rid of him. He was caught by Manan Vohra at sweeper cover.Yuvraj was unperturbed by the dismissal and went about his business in style hitting two sixes off Awana before being caught at extra cover by Gurkeerat Singh off Mahmood.Wright, who walked in after the dismissal of Yuvraj, was in ominous form as he clobbered Mahmood for four successive fours. He came down hard on an otherwise economical Praveen Kumar in the next over and smashed him for two fours and six to accumulate 20 runs off his over.He was dismissed in the last over of the innings, caught by David Hussey at long on off Mahmood.PTI

Karthik confident of finding way back into Team India

Next

Mumbai Indians' Dinesh Karthik firmly believes that he has the ability to play for India as a specialist batsman and he is confident of delivering the goods when he gets another chance at the highest level.
"I have always had the confidence in my batting abilities. I have played as a batsman for India earlier also, and I can deliver as a specialist batsman when I get an opportunity once again," said Karthik, who has so far scored 254 runs in five matches with a strike rate of nearly 150.
For him, the main motivation to do well in the IPL is the fact that every team has quality international fast bowlers.
"You look at teams and you will find that there are three international bowlers in each team. Tomorrow, if I do well against Morne Morkel, it will be a huge morale booster. Similarly, when we play against Sunrisers, you get to face Dale Steyn," Karthik explained.

Can Punjab pull off a win over Pune Warriors?

Next
Their campaign in the doldrums, Kings XI Punjab will have to sort out their batting woes when they take on an equally beleaguered Pune Warriors in a clash of the laggards in the IPL in Mohali on Sunday.
With just two wins from five outings, poor batting has been the bane of the Adam Gilchrist-led Punjab. In fact, the dismal form of the captain himself remains a cause of concern for the home team.
The 41-year-old veteran, who has played 96 Tests and 287 ODIs, has failed to play a big knock and anchor the innings for Punjab even once, so far.
Failure to build partnerships and the batsmen's general lack of application in critical situations has not helped the Preity Zinta co-owned team, which has been heavily dependent on Gilchrist, David Hussey and Mandeep Singh.
The problem came to fore once again when they lost five wickets for just 20 odd runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last away match after cruising at one stage (104-4) on Friday.

IPL 6: Bangalore top table with comfortable 7-wicket win over Rajasthan

There was modest individual success but no happy homecoming for Rahul Dravid on what was an eminently forgettable night. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, packed to the rafters, rose as one to welcome one of Bangalore's favourite cricketing sons on Saturday (April 20) night, threatening to bring the roof down with the kind of reception Dravid hasn't received at the venue when playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Karnataka or even India. The Rajasthan Royals captain responded in style with a typically stylish innings, threatening to make a fist of it alongside Stuart Binny, another prodigal son, before the wheels completely came off when Dravid was caught trying to clear long-on off the bowling of Murali Kartik. (Match in pics)Handily placed for a final push at 97 for 3 midway through the 15th over, Rajasthan collapsed in sensational fashion in the face of disciplined pace bowling from Bangalore - who didn't concede a single extra - as they lost their last seven wickets for just 20 runs in 31 deliveries to be bowled out for 117. It was Rajasthan's lowest total of Pepsi IPL 2013 and the first time in six games that they had failed to bat out their quota of overs. It was a far from adequate total on an excellent batting strip, and so it proved as Bangalore cruised home by seven wickets after racing to 123 for 3. (Scorecentre)Bangalore's fifth win in as many games at a ground that has become their fortress this season catapulted them from fourth place to the top of the league standings with 10 points from seven games. (Statistical highlights: Vinay Kumar takes the purple cap)Tillakaratne Dilshan, back in the side, provided the early thrust alongside Chris Gayle, subdued through the duration of his innings. Dravid set attacking fields with an eye on taking wickets but Dilshan peppered the on-side boundary, taking a special liking to Shaun Tait's express pace. The pair put on 53 in only 40 deliveries when Shane Watson, bowling for the first time in the competition, struck paydirt with his fourth delivery, having Dilshan caught behind.
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers came and went in a trice to create some articificial excitement, but with Gayle around, Bangalore were never under any serious threat. Saurabh Tiwary, making a comeback, took his time finding his feet, but he and Gayle added 59 for the fourth wicket to see the team home. (Watch: Match analysis)It's no exaggeration to say that Rajasthan fairly handed the game over on a platter to Bangalore with an inexplicably abject surrender in the wake of Dravid's dismissal. The night had begun with plenty of promise, Watson whipping the first ball from Ravi Pampaul to the long-leg fence after Kohli stuck Rajasthan in, but apart from the Dravid-Binny association in which the younger man was clearly the dominant partner, Rajasthan were comprehensively outclassed.Binny strode out to join Dravid after Watson had been smartly taken by Kartik at mid off, leaping to snaffle a drive off Rampaul, and Ajinkya Rahane fell prey to a good slower delivery from Jaydev Unadkat. He began with a fluent punch on the up off Unadkat, then continued to bat with refreshing freedom as he hit the ball long and hard, taking a particular liking to Kartik's left-arm spin. Dravid, measured by comparison, was happy to play second fiddle during a stand of 40 off just 27 deliveres, ended by R Vinay Kumar inducing a top-edged pull from Binny that was smartly gathered by Arun Karthik, the wicketkeeper making excellent ground running backwards.Dravid carried on, whipping and pulling Kartik for boundaries but Kartik had the last laugh, eliciting a lofted drive that snuggled nicely into long-on's hands. It triggered complete mayhem in the Rajasthan camp for no discernible reason. Well as Vinay, Rampaul and RP Singh bowled, even they must have been surprised at the ease and rapidity with which they picked up wickets while giving nothing away.Vinay finished with 3 for 18 to wrest the Purple Cap back, Rampaul had 2 for 19 and RP Singh enviable figures of 3 for 13 from four overs, leaving their batsmen with a relatively straightforward task.

Hussey’s return has helped Super Kings

Hussey
The Chennai Super Kings appear to have turned the corner in IPL 6 with a massive 86-run rout of the Delhi Daredevils. Coming into tonight’s clash with the Kolkata Knight Riders, MS Dhoni and his men will be full of confidence and looking to make another statement to the rest of the
competition. I thought Michael Hussey’s return to the team was a key to their success, with a fantastic partnership alongside his captain providing the platform for his side’s 170 runs. Unbeaten on 65, Hussey was patient at the crease before opening up with some vintage shots.  He was well supported by M Vijay and Suresh Raina besides Dhoni, with all four batsmen putting in strong performances.
They now face a Knight Riders side who will react one of two ways following their disappointing last ball loss to Kings XI Punjab earlier this week. Gautam Gambhir, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee and their other leaders are proud cricketers, so I’m tipping a fightback, which should provide great theatre in front of their home fans. But I think it’s difficult to look past the Super Kings in what I expect will be another close one.
Another big game tonight is the Royal Challengers Bangalore facing the Rajasthan Royals in a battle of table toppers. RCB are undefeated at home so far this season but will face stiff competition from the Royals who are on fire after four wins in their last five outings. I’ve enjoyed watching the Royals so far, with their Indian contingent of Rahane, Dravid, Sreesanth and Trivedi all playing exceptionally well.
For RCB, it’s tough to look past Gayle, Kohli and AB de Villiers- three batsmen full of firepower and capable of winning games on their own. Rest assured this will be a thoroughly entertaining contest. In front of a partisan home crowd though, I’m tipping RCB will take home the chocolates.
